Putting on New Clothes
Colossians 3:12-17
Memory Verses: Colossians 3:14-15
Day 1: Think about it!!
Why do people wear uniforms? Police Officers were uniforms to give comfort to the weak and fear to the wicked. Athletes wear uniforms to show there unity and to prevent confusion. Soldiers were uniforms to be identified to their service but also their nation. Fans were uniforms to show support.
Paul says in Colossians 3:12 that a Christian must put on a uniform. Why do Christians were uniforms and what do they look like?
Day 2: Uniforms for Christians
So, how does the Christian uniform look? Paul does not command the putting on of certain apparel, but Colossians 3:12 command us to put on “bowels of mercies. Our first thought of the is the unattractive thought of bowels. However, the Greeks believed the bowels and intestines to be the center of emotions. What part of the body would that compare to today? _______________ That is right- the heart. The term “bowels of mercies” means compassion. The Bible says that God is full of compassion (Ps. 86:15). It is no surprise that to see that trait used to describe Christ numerous times. Who did He have compassion on in the following passages: Mark 1:41 ______________, Matt. 9:36 ______________, Matt. 15:32 ____________, and Matt. 20:34 _______________. If we were truly Christlike and remembered God’s grace to us, then we would extend compassion to the hopeless and helpless.
Kindness (Col. 3:12) flows from a heart of compassion. Kindness opens door closed by anger (Col. 3:8). This kindness is reflected in action, not just in word. Who and How can you show kindness today? ________________ Ok, now do it.

Day 3: Clothed with Humility
Humility is becoming as rare as a spotted owl, but God expects it. John the Baptists exemplified humility. When certain religious leaders asked John if he was the Messiah, what humble response did he give (John 1:19-27)? _________________________________
During the final days of William Carey, a fellow missionary was speaking of Carey’s accomplishments to a group of people. After a while Carey interrupted, “Sir, you have been speaking about nothing but Dr. Carey. When I am gone, speak nothing of Dr. Carey- speak only about Dr. Carey’s Savior.
Meekness (Col. 3:12) is quality of perceiving God’s will as all-important. A meek person submits to God’s will and thinks God can handle any situation. Who was described as meek in Numbers 12:3? __________________
Colossians 3:12 also list longsuffering as part of the Christian uniform. Longsuffering or patience will allow us to forbear and forgive (13a), even as Christ forgave us (13b). It will allow God to turn our problems into occasions of forgiveness. And what, according to vs. 14, ties all those qualities together? ____________
Day 4: The Umpire Makes the Call
A baseball game without a umpire would be frustrating and tense. The word “rule: in Colossians 3:15 means to umpire or arbitrate. In order for peace to exist, God makes be making the calls. If calls is ignored or not even asked to make decisions, then frustration and tension will be present. Can you think of any examples in Scripture where God’s absence created personal problems?
Day 5: Even if You Can’t Carry a Tune
I cannot sing very well. Many of you would agree to that statement, but I love to sing when it is singing the word of Christ. Notice a few things about music according to Colossians 3:16.
What should the words be based on? _______
What reason should we sing? _____________
What kinds of music should we sing? _______
_____________________________________
Who do we sing to? _____________________
Stop right now and sing “I Love You, Lord”. The thing is if we are singing to God, we better mean it.
Day 6: Putting It into Practice
All of Paul’s admonishments can be summed up in Colossians 3:17. Remember, our Christian uniform identifies us to Christ. The name on the front of a sports jersey should mean more than the name on the back, so it is with us. The praise should be directed to the One who unified us through His blood.
What changes do you need to make in order to honor God in these areas?
