A thought about Mothers

A recent survey done by an online salary company determined that an average stay-at-home mother would earn $131,471 annually, including overtime, if she received a paycheck. It is estimated that she works about 100 hours a week, and would be entitled to a base pay of $43,461, with an additional $88,009 for the 60 overtime hours she puts in a week.

Of course…moms don't get paid for what they do, which makes their service to families all the more impressive! Perhaps there is no group of people who serve more than our moms…and on top of it, make no salary for it. Although they aren't making a salary, they are rich in the eyes of God as they are reapoing eternal rewards!

Teens, make sure you are adequately preparing to honor your moms tomorrow. Be creative, make it meaningful. Make sure your mom feels your honor!

POST-UP
3 on 3 Basketball Tournament
June 29 & 30

PURPOSE:
The primary purpose of the POST-UP [Proclaiming
Our Savior To Un-reached People] ministry is to reach into the community and make Christ known to those who do not know him. A secondary purpose is to encourage believers to live as Christ in every area of their lives.

ANTICIPATED RESULTS:
The anticipated results of the tournament are these: [1] seeds will be planted; [2] individuals will come to Christ; [3] believers will be encouraged in their walk with Christ; [4] all involved will enjoy friendly competition.

PARTICIPANTS:
There will be four divisions:
Grades 4-6 (fall of 2007)
Grades 7-8 (fall of 2007)
Grades 9-12 (fall of 2006, but will include senior class of 2007)
-The 9th-12th grades will be involved in pool play on Friday, then top teams will be separated for Saturday Tournament.

TEAM COMPETITION:
a Each team must have 3 players to play a game. Each team can have
5 players per squad.
b The tournament will run over both July 7 & 8. The elementary and Junior High divisions will run as follows:
June 29- 12:00-4:00PM
June 30- 10:00AM-1:00PM
The Senior High divisions will run as following:
June 29- 5:00PM-9:00PM
June 30-2:00PM-6:00PM
c There will be a Bible message each day for all age groups (attendance is required to play).
d There will also be a slam dunk competition and a 3-point competition.
e Games will be played in the gym and also on outdoor courts.
f Schedules for the tournament will be available on July 2nd.

COST:
a $20.00 per person-due before you begin play.
b This will include a T-shirt and prizes.
c A concession stand will also be available.


GAME RULES:
a IHSAA Rules will be used with exception of this list.
b Gym shoes must be worn for all games.
c The game will be 15-minute games with a running clock for all divisions.
d No time-outs will be awarded.
e All participating players must meet 5 minutes prior to their schedule game to ensure that we are still on schedule.
f “Check” the ball on all in-bounds [top of the key].
g Each team is allotted 6 fouls per game. After that we will be going to 1 and 1 attempts. After the 10th foul it is a 2 shot foul.
h Scoring is normal for 3 pts, 2 pts and free throws.
i Ball must be taken past the 3-point circle on change of possession.
j 2-minute overtime will be played.
k Bench players may enter with approval of referee.
l Officials will make whatever decisions are necessary to control play and safety.

a Please register by Sunday the June 17.
b Rosters must be turned in by June 24. No changes may be made after that date.
c Registrations may be turned into Pastor Pete or Rich Rucano
d Young people registering as individuals will be placed on a team. You may sign up as a three-man to five-man team [note that on your sheet].

Kissing before marriage

I found this article writing by a senior in high school on the topic of kissing. I thought it was interesting and very well thought through and written, but then my thought was- he must be a wierdo right. I mean what senior would say this, unless he never dates. Further reading, I found he is a normal guy with a girlfriend. Anyway, read this with a open mind.


Premaritial Kissing?
I wrote this today for a friend who has friends at college who are confessing Christians, but believe that there is nothing wrong with kissing before marriage. I'm not here to get in their face, but here are my thoughts, and what I believe Scripture has to say about it...

We were created with the purpose of glorifying God in everything we do.
(1 Corinthians 10:31, 1 Corinthians 6:20, 1 Peter 2:12, Jeremiah 13:16, Acts 12:23, Romans 4:20, Romans 16:27, Philippians 4:20, 1 Thessalonians 2:12, 1 Timothy 1:17, Jude 1:25, Revelation 7:12, Revelation 14:7) This means that we are called to do everything for Him, not for ourselves, or our own pleasures. He has called us to give Him glory, and live for Him alone. In everything we do, our first question should be, "Will this glorify God?" and "How?". Anything we do that we cannot clearly see as God-glorifying is sin. Kissing before marriage is something that is done to please self, and to bring satisfaction to yourself. I highly doubt there are many people who do it for the purpose of bringing God glory.

God has commanded us to flee temptation.
(1 Corinthians 6:18, 1 Corinthians 10:14, 1 Timothy 6:11, 2 Timothy 2:22, Matthew 26:41, 1 Corinthians 10:13, 1 Peter 3:10-12 etc...) We are not to do anything that would lead us into temptation. We are to avoid sin, not "flirt" with it. Sin is wicked and evil in the eyes of the Lord. It is the enemy of God. We should not see how close we can get to it without actually going into it, we should stay as far away as possible. We shouldn't be trying to see how close we can get to the line without crossing over it, we should be trying to stay as far away from the line as possible. The more you open yourself up to temptation, the easier it will be to go just one step closer. Sin is subtle in its workings, you don't just suddenly sin in some huge way. It works into your heart slowly, over time. Kissing before marriage could easily lead to greater sins of sexual immorality. Don't put yourself in a position that allows sin to take hold of your heart. Even if there is nothing wrong with kissing in and of itself, it allows temptation to creep in, and takes your heart off of God.

We are to reserve ourselves for our future spouse
(Proverbs 2:16-19, Proverbs 5:8, Proverbs 5:15-23, Malachi 2:15, Luke 16:18, 1 Corinthians 7:10-11, 1 Peter 3:1-7) God has called us to remain pure. (Matthew 5:8, Ephesians 5:5, Philippians 1:10, 2 Timothy 2:22, Titus 1:15-16, James 1:27, James 3:17, 1 Peter 1:22, 1 John 3:3, Galatians 5:16-25) Kissing is meant to be between a husband and a wife. If you were married, you wouldn't go kissing somebody you weren't married to. That would obviously be sin. Why is it different before marriage? You don't know for sure who you will marry someday. Reserve yourself for your future husband/wife. And even if you are absolutely sure that you will one day get married, you are also called to patience and self-control. (Job 6:11, Ecclesiastes 7:8. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, 1 Corinthians 13:4, Hebrews 6:15, Revelation 2:3, Proverbs 25:28, 1 Corinthians 7:9, 1 Corinthians 9:25, Galatians 5:22-23, 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8, 2 Timothy 1:7, Titus 1:8, Titus 2:6, Titus 2:12, 1 Peter 4:7, 2 Peter 1:5-11 etc..) This is the way to walk in the Lord. He calls you to patience.

God has called us to live according to the Spirit, not according to the flesh
(Titus 2:12, Romans 7:5, Romans 7:18, Romans 7:25, Romans 8:1-17, Romans 12:2, Romans 13:14, 1 Corinthians 3:3, 2 Corinthians 10:3, Galatians 5:13, Galatians 5:16-25, Galatians 6:8, Ephesians 2:3, etc...) God has called us to live by His Spirit. Kissing outside of marriage may be something regularly done in the world today. However, God calls us to forsake the things of this world and live solely for Him. 1 John 2:15-17 says, "Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever."

God calls us to be witnesses in the world
(1 Thessalonians 2:9-12, Acts 1:8, Acts 5:32, Matthew 5:13) God asks us to be salt and light in the earth. How can we be salt and light, standing out in the darkness, if we practice the very same things? The people in the world hear Christians talking about how holy marriage is, but then they see those same Christians kissing outside marriage, and living in ways that are no different than the world.

A few more verses you should take into consideration...
1 Corinthians 10:23 - "All things are lawful," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful," but not all things build up.

1 Corinthians 6:12-15 - "All things are lawful for me," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful for me," but I will not be enslaved by anything. "Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food"—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 - Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
Proverbs 6:27-28 - Can a man carry fire next to his chest and his clothes not be burned? Or can one walk on hot coals and his feet not be scorched?

There may not be a specific biblical command not to kiss before marriage, but not everything is helpful, and not everything builds up. We are members of Christ, and we are called to glorify God with our bodies. We belong to Him now. We must devote our entire lives to Him, and not "flirt" with sin and temptation. The more we "flirt" with sin, the closer we become to being "scorched".

Dealing with tragedy


The events at Virginia Tech again remind me of a few facts.
1. First, and foremost, God is in control. Just as God was in control when the Babylonian army stormed into Jerusalem and destroyed the city, just so that God could show His people that He meant it when He told them to follow Him. He allow it also to show His power in bringing them back into the land. Just as God was in control when He allowed his son to die to bring us salvation. Just as God was in control in Columbine 8 years ago when He allowed the school shooting to bring more people to Him. So, God is on control now on the campus of Virginia Tech.
2. Second, sin has penalties. I am not saying that the 32 (besides the shooter) who died and the 20+ injured got what they deserved, but sin brought about death. That will never change. We cannot change the effect of sin in this life, but we can change its effect on the next life. As a Christian, sin has no power over my destiny, because Christ took care of that on the cross.
3. Third, people are empty without Christ. It is too early for us to know much about the shooter, but I can say with certainty a few things about him. He was looking for satisfaction outside of the only place that brings satisfaction-- Jesus Christ. He was looking for resolution outside of the ultimate source-- The Bible. He was trusting in the wrong authority of himself, instead of the supreme authority-- God.
4. Lastly, people are hurting. 33 families have lost a part of them. 20+ families are praying for recovery. Millions around our country and the world are stunned and saddened. You, as a Christian, have the only answer to all of these problems. The question is-- What are you doing to share this answer of Christ?

A Need For Prayer

Day 1: Think about it!!

Five young college students were spending a Sunday in London, so they went to hear the famed C.H. Spurgeon preach. While waiting for the doors to open, the students were greeted by a man who asked, "Gentlemen, let me show you around. Would you like to see the heating plant of this church?" They were not particularly interested, for it was a hot day in July. But they didn't want to offend the stranger, so they consented. The young men were taken down a stairway, a door was quietly opened, and their guide whispered, "This is our heating plant." Surprised, the students saw 700 people bowed in prayer, seeking a blessing on the service that was soon to begin in the auditorium above. Softly closing the door, the gentleman then introduced himself. It was none other than Charles Spurgeon.

Day 2: Prayer and Sin

Strained relationships are not fun. Lack of communication can create a bad relationship. The same is true of our relationship with God. Prayer can be not effective is sin is dominating our life. Read Psalm 66:18 and state in your own words what this verse means.
How do we get rid of sin? Read I John 1:9 and state what we are to do about sin?


What two things will God do then?


Note Nehemiah’s prayer in Nehemiah 1:4-10. How did Nehemiah begin the prayer in vs 5?

What did he say next in vs. 6-7?


Then in vs. 8-10, he claimed God’s promises. What did he do at the end of his prayer?


Day 3: Why we can pray?

Study I Timothy 2:5 and I John 2:1. In these two passages the word mediator and advocate mean basically the same thing: Christ is your lawyer. He pleads your case before God, showing Him that you are under His blood. When God looks at your sin, He sees only the righteousness of Christ. Christ actually deposited eternal life for you in the bank of heaven. Because of Christ’s work, you can stand before God and speak to Him.
Note Hebrews 10:19-22. With what attitude can you approach God in prayer?


Day 4: How to pray

Read Ephesians 5:20; John 14:6, 13, 14; 15:16; 16:23-27.
Should you pray to the Father, the Son, or the Holy Spirit?

What one phrase occurs over and over again in these verses?

Whose name are these verses speaking of?

Therefore, in whose name should we pray?

When Christ went back into heaven, He promised to send the Comforter. Read John 14:16; 15:26; 16:7. Who is this Comforter?

What does He do for you when you pray (Rom. 8:26)?


Day 5: How to know your prayers will be answered.

There are certain prerequisites for answered prayer. Look up the following passages and see what it says is necessary for prayer.

Here are 10 of the top April Fool's Day pranks ever pulled off, as judged by the San Diego-based Museum of Hoaxes for their notoriety, absurdity, and number of people duped.
-- In 1957, a BBC television show announced that thanks to a mild winter and the virtual elimination of the spaghetti weevil, Swiss farmers were enjoying a bumper spaghetti crop. Footage of Swiss farmers pulling strands of spaghetti from trees prompted a barrage of calls from people wanting to know how to grow their own spaghetti at home.
-- In 1985, Sports Illustrated magazine published a story that a rookie baseball pitcher who could reportedly throw a ball at 270 kilometers per hour (168 miles per hour) was set to join the New York Mets. Finch was said to have mastered his skill -- pitching significantly faster than anyone else has ever managed -- in a Tibetan monastery. Mets fans' celebrations were short-lived.
-- Sweden in 1962 had only one television channel, which broadcast in black and white. The station's technical expert appeared on the news to announce that thanks to a newly developed technology, viewers could convert their existing sets to receive color pictures by pulling a nylon stocking over the screen. Day 1: Think about it!!

Clovis Chappell, a minister from a century back, used to tell the story of two paddleboats. They left Memphis about the same time, traveling down the Mississippi River to New Orleans. As they traveled side by side, sailors from one vessel made a few remarks about the snail's pace of the other.
Words were exchanged. Challenges were made. And the race began. Competition became vicious as the two boats roared through the Deep South.
One boat began falling behind. Not enough fuel. There had been plenty of coal for the trip, but not enough for a race. As the boat dropped back, an enterprising young sailor took some of the ship's cargo and tossed it into the ovens. When the sailors saw that the supplies burned as well as the coal, they fueled their boat with the material they had been assigned to transport. They ended up winning the race, but burned their cargo.
God has entrusted cargo to us, too. Our cargo is to do the will of God. The question is: what other things get in the way of us carrying the “cargo”?

God gives us many promises in His Word. Many of these promises are unconditional, but most are conditional upon our obedience. Jesus challenged His disciples to consider their commitment. What does Christ say is involved with commitment according to Luke 9:23-24?

Following Christ in this way may mean struggles and trials, but how does Christ respond to us following Him (Matthew 11:28-30)?


But what does God want our attitude to be, as seen in Matthew 6:33?

See the connection? If we seek Him first and obey His commands, then that which we need is provided according to God’s will.

Day 4- Are You Loving It?

“I’m loving it.” McDonalds has made that a familiar phrase, but the question is what are you loving? What does Colossians 3:2 say that we should love?

But notice what the previous verse says. “Seek those things”. A better phrase for seek is follow after wholeheartedly. I John 2:15-17 tells us to not follow after what?

James 4:1-4 tells us that if we set our affections on the world, then what is our relationship with God?


Day 5- Priority #1

Jesus Christ is the creator of all things (Colossians 1:15-16). Therefore, all things belong to Him. So, he should have first claim on our priorities. What does God want in response according to Colossians 1:19-19?


What does that mean?


Day 6- Putting It Into Action

God wants first CLAIM on our priorities. Using the word “claim”, record what are your priorities in each of the following areas:

Where have I been

It has been a while since I have been on here, so I thought I would give you some things to think about.

Questions to ponder...

Why is it that no matter what color of bubble bath you use the bubbles are always white?

Why do people constantly return to the refrigerator with hopes that something new to eat will have materialized?

On electric toasters, why do they engrave the message "one slice"? How many pieces of bread do they think people are really gonna try to stuff in that slot?

Why is it that no plastic garbage bag will open from the end you first try?

How do those dead bugs get into those closed light fixtures?

Considering all the lint you get in your dryer, if you kept drying your clothes would they eventually just disappear?

Why is it that whenever you attempt to catch something that's falling off the table you always manage to knock something else over?

In winter why do we try to keep the house as warm as it was in summer when we complained about the heat?

The statistics on sanity are that one out of every four North Americans is suffering from some sort of mental illness. Think of your three best friends, if they're okay, then it's you.

Day 1: Think about it!!

Jesus said, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matt. 4:19) What does that mean? Who was Jesus addressing in this passage? _________________ What was their occupation? ________________ Being fisherman, these men knew that Christ was saying something about catching men, instead of fish. Just as the Bible speaks of the souls of men as being lost sheep, so He refers to them as fish. The occupation that Christ thrusts all believers into is that of catching lost souls for Christ. Day 4: The Love of Christ Constrains It

This says that we love God so much, we cannot help but share with others what He has done for us.
Do you love Him that much? In Psalm 119:53, what one word does David use to express his concern for the lost? _______________________
His horror was not for the condition of the lost, but the unsaved caused his feeling of horror. Why is he horrified then? First, he takes no pleasure in seeing God’s Word rejected. Second, he is hurt to see God whom he loves rejected.

Remember the picture of the guy on the wall. Brandon Knowles was right. He is a professional artist, specializing in illusions. The arm that you see touching the wall, really isn't his arm. His real left arm is tucked away in his shirt, under his suit coat. The fake arm attached to the wall is a steel rod drilled into the wall. The rod then connects to an elaborate body suit that holds him in place. He sits there comfortably the entire time, pretending to be touching the wall. Things are not as they always appear.

These pictures made me think about sin. Sin appears to be one way, but it is actually quite different. Sin is deceptive. Our flesh is actively trying to get us to see sin as a pleasure and not as a problem. Our flesh tells us that you can only be happy is you are dating and intimate, but that leads to heartache. Our flesh tells us that a certain show is hilarious, but the result is it builds habits in us that draw us from God. This means, that often times, when we really feel like we are seeing things the right way and that it is US who has the correct perspective, we are often wrong. Others, often, have a much better perspective on your hearts than you do…mostly your parents, who know you the best. Don't trust yourself. Don't trust your perspective. See below how perspective changes your view.

Day 1: Think about it!!

Robert Burn, Scotland’s national poet 200 years ago, was in a strange city, and feeling lonely and blue, he visited a church. No one there welcomed him, offered him a handshake, or spoke to him. So, before he left the church, he wrote on the flyleaf of a hymnal:
As cold a wind as ever blew:
A colder church, and in it few;
As cold a minister ever spoke;
You will all be hot before I come back!
Wow! Unfortunately, a lot of churches are like that today. Christians ought to be the friendliest people on earth. Christians ought to treat everyone like a friend. What does Proverbs 17:17 say about friends?



Day 2: Three cheers for Tychicus

Every Christian is a brother or a sister in the Lord, but Paul described Tychicus as even more special. He was sent by Paul to give a report to the churches on how Paul was doing.
Paul describes him in 3 ways:
“A beloved brother” (4:7)- He lifted others burdens; He built others spirits. He was an encourager.
Who is a beloved brother to you? __________

“A faithful minister” (4:7)- He was dependable in times of difficulty.

“Fellow servant in the Lord” (4:7)- Paul saw him as an equal, but also as one who did the work.

Day 3: Twice-Born Slave

Tychicus would not be traveling alone to Colosse. Paul sent Onesimus with him. Onesimus was from Colosse where he had been a slave to Philemon. Read the book of Philemon. According to that letter, Onesimus had run away from Philemon, ended up meeting Paul, and was led to the Lord by Paul. Paul was sending him back to Philemon, and he calls him, “a faithful and beloved brother.”
Based on his past and his position in life, what can we learn from what Paul said?


In Christ, we are all equal. In Christ, we are all given a second chance.
Day 4: Three Faithful Jewish Believers

After alerting the Colosse church that Tychicus and Onesimus were going to be visiting them, Paul then sends greeting from three Jewish believers: Aristarchus, Marcus, and Justus.
Aristarchus was a prisoner with Paul at Rome (Col. 4:10). Where else was he with Paul (Acts 19:29)?

Marcus (John Mark) was the nephew to Barnabas (Col. 4:10). Paul and John Mark had a falling out during his first missionary journey. For the next missionary journey, Barnabas wanted to take Marcus again, but Paul refused, so the two parted ways. However, Paul and Marcus reconciled later on. How did Paul describe him in II Timothy 4:11?

Jesus, also called Justus, was also a friend of Paul. These men were faithful to serve with or for Paul. Are you a faithful servant?

Colossians 4:2-6

Day 1: Think about it!!

A young pastor, eager to make his first sermon a memorable one, shared a few of his sermon ideas with one of the deacons. “I am planning to confront hypocrites, gossips, and lukewarm Christians.”

Solemnly, the deacon informed the pastor that some of the rather influential church members fell into those categories. “It might be best, Pastor,” the deacon advised, “to preach against witch doctors. There isn’t one of them within 4,000 miles of here.”

Those are the type of people Paul is addressing in Colossians 4:2-6. Read the passage and pray for God to show you were you need to change.

Day 2: Don’t Give Up Praying, Don’t Ever Give Up

North Carolina State basketball coach, Jim Valvano, inspired his players to put their best effort into every game. “Don’t give up, Don’t ever give up,” Coach would tell his players. The players took his advice winning the national championship in 1983. Later, Valvano would carry this attitude into a much harder battle, the battle against cancer. He fought valiantly until his death in 1993. Near the end, he was assisted to the podium of a national sports award show to give a speech. He told the audience, “Don’t give up, don’t ever give up”.

That is the attitude Paul was looking for when He said, “Continue in prayer”. (Col. 4:2) What was Daniel’s attitude concerning prayer in Dan. 6:7-10?


What did the Christians of Acts show us about prayer in Acts 12:1-12?


Day 3: Thank you, Lord!

Our loving Heavenly Father has invited us- and even urged us- to approach Him anytime with any request (Phil. 4:6; Heb. 4:16). However, our prayers should consist of more than requests. Along with our requests, we should offer thanks. Colossians 4:2 says, “watch in the same (prayer) with thanksgiving”.
This means we should be alert to opportunities to thank God. Take a few moments to list in each category below some items for which you are thankful.

Day 4- Be Specific

Paul urged the Colossians to pray specifically. Paul does not ask for prayer for his release, but instead ask that God can use him while in prison (Vs 3-4). Paul asked the people to pray for evangelistic opportunities. Each of us has a distinct mission field- a circle of friends, acquaintances, and relatives who need Christ. Our youth group survey revealed that over 50% of our youth group has at least 6 unsaved friends. We need to be prayer for those open door chances to witness to them. Think of 3 friends that you want to witness to and pray that God will create an opportunity. How can you create one?


Day 5- Walk and Talk

Christians need to change the world by standing out as different. In the last 3 decades, church membership has grown by 30% in our country, but in the same time, the countries moral climate has deteriorated. Violent crime has increased by 550%. Single parent families have increased from 10% to 40%. Divorce rate has doubled. We should contrast the world, but too often we do not.

Paul says we are to walk in wisdom, but why (vs5)? ________________ That is right. We are to be an example to the lost. If evidence exists that we are a real Christian, then opportunities to share the gospel will follow.

Paul then addresses one specific area to walk wisely- our speech. Based on verse 6, how should our speech be?

Summer Wednesday Nights goal and ideas

I am planning some things for the summer months. I want to see us have a more evangelistic outlook. I think we need to be thinking of ways to bring more teens into our youth group. I started looking at all the names that some of you gave that you are praying for to get saved. I realized something. If all of you just invited your unsaved friends to youth group, our group would more than triple in size. Wow!!!!!
But what do I need to do to get you to bring them? I want to make our Wednesday nights in the summer your chance to bring friends with the sole purpose of sharing the Gospel with them. But what would get them here? I need your ideas. What would attract your friends to us? I want to give you a few Biblical guidlines though.
1. We cannot compromise what we believe. (ie. we will not host a rock concert, haha)
2. We must keep it in the time frame (a couple hours, at most)
3. We cannot do anything expensive.
I would love to make a goal of seeing 5-10 teens saved this summer through our youth group, but all of you need to be apart of it. I would love to preach a salvation message every week in the summer, but if noone invites friends, then I would preach it to church teens every week.
In October, Will Galkin will be here. During that week, we will do a major outreach for teens, but I would love to see us do that before that time even comes.

Give me your ideas for Wed. nights in the summer. Let's throw some ideas around. Nothing will be mocked. Ok, if it is rubber duckies, maybe.

Life at Home and Work
Colossians 3:18-4:1

Memory Verses: Colossians 3:23-24

Day 1: Think about it!!
How many of you have ever seen the old show Leave It To Beaver? That was a different time. The clothing was different. The hair styles were different. The cars were different. Everything was different. Family life was also different. It was a time when every kid had two parents that though they did not always like what mom and dad said, they showed respect. Things seemed perfect between husband and wife. Life was not always that way, but in reality, that is what Paul is calling for in our homes- harmony. Rate yourself 1 to 10 on how you get along with each member of your family.
Day 2: Home, Sweet, Home
Paul promotes good family living in Colossians 3:18-21. He begins with the wives when he says, “Wives, submit yourselves unto your husbands.” To understand what submit means, first we must understand what it is not. It is not a command for the wife to keep her personality hidden, to act as a robot controlled by the husband, or to act as a doormat. Submit means “to rank under”. What does the sound like? ________________ Why are there ranks in the military? ______________ Imagine if our country went to war, but the soldiers did not know who was in charge. That would be chaotic. Submission is also a picture of Christ’s submitting to the Father’s will.
The command to the husband is to love. The word used here is the same that was used in John 3:16, speaking of an unconditional love of God to us. He adds to that a command for husbands to not be bitter towards their wives. Resentment comes when love is not unconditional. What do you think could cause a husband to be bitter towards his wife? ___________________________________

Day 4: Do I Really Have To?
Paul then zeros in on love and discipline in the home. He starts with children. Colossians 3:20 is trying to focus on the motive for obedience. What do you think it is? ________ It is not because you have to do it, but because you want to please God. The duty of the parent is to discipline in a God-honoring way, but the children must obey in the same way. Think of three ways to say honor to your parents today, which in turn brings glory to God’s name.


Day 5: Work, Sweet, Work
Colossians 3:22-4:1 deal with our relationship with authority in the work setting. Remember, Paul was addressing a number of people who were slaves, so no boss is impossible to serve.
According to vs 22, how often should you obey your boss?
Notice that the motivation is again to please God, because of our proper view of Him.
What does vs. 24 say about how we should respond if we do not get the raise or promotion we think we should get?

What motivates you?

Notre Dame football star George Gipp could do it all -- run, pass, and punt with unparalleled skill. The 1920 season established the Gipp as a football immortal. But on December 14, 1920, young George Gipp died of pneumonia. But thanks to football legend -- and a movie in which former president Ronald Reagan portrayed Gipp -- the story of George Gipp lived on. On November 10, 1928, Notre Dame and Army were tied at halftime. Notre Dame coach Knute Rockne, himself a legend, told of being at the dying Gipp's bedside. Rockne recalled how Gipp feebly said, "Sometime, Rock, when the team is up against it, when things are going wrong and the breaks are beating the boys -- tell them to go in there with all they've got and win just one for the Gipper." They did.

A Good Name

Okay, I need everyone to participate here. Last week, I asked you for some ideas for a name for the youth group. I got a number and a few not so good ones (rubber duckies). Some also gave me some in person, plus I had a list of my own. I am going to list a bunch of them here. I want you to read it over and pick you 3 favorite. Teen Can't Shake 3-Week-Old Case of Hiccups

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Jennifer Mee can't stop hiccuping.
For more than three weeks now, the 15-year-old St. Petersburg teen has hiccuped close to 50 times a minute — despite the best efforts of doctors and home remedies.
She's had blood tests, a CT Scan and an MRI. Drugs haven't worked. Neither has holding her breath, putting sugar under her tongue, sipping pickle juice, breathing into a paper bag and drinking out of the wrong side of a glass.
And, yes, people have tried to scare them out of her.
The hiccups do stop when she's sleeping.
According to the National Institute of Health, hiccups are caused by involuntary contractions of the diaphragm, which causes vocal cords to briefly close, which makes that distinctive hiccup sound. They can start for no reason or be triggered by anything from spicy foods to stress.
It is not clear what triggered Jennifer's hiccups, which started in school Jan. 23. Her mother, Rachel Robidoux, recently turned to the local newspaper for help.
"I'm just looking for some answers where somebody's gone through this," Robidoux told the St. Petersburg Times. "At this point, we're willing to do anything."

Day 1: Think about it!!
Why do people wear uniforms? Police Officers were uniforms to give comfort to the weak and fear to the wicked. Athletes wear uniforms to show there unity and to prevent confusion. Soldiers were uniforms to be identified to their service but also their nation. Fans were uniforms to show support.
Paul says in Colossians 3:12 that a Christian must put on a uniform. Why do Christians were uniforms and what do they look like?


Day 2: Uniforms for Christians
So, how does the Christian uniform look? Paul does not command the putting on of certain apparel, but Colossians 3:12 command us to put on “bowels of mercies. Our first thought of the is the unattractive thought of bowels. However, the Greeks believed the bowels and intestines to be the center of emotions. What part of the body would that compare to today? _______________ That is right- the heart. The term “bowels of mercies” means compassion. The Bible says that God is full of compassion (Ps. 86:15). It is no surprise that to see that trait used to describe Christ numerous times. Who did He have compassion on in the following passages: Mark 1:41 ______________, Matt. 9:36 ______________, Matt. 15:32 ____________, and Matt. 20:34 _______________. If we were truly Christlike and remembered God’s grace to us, then we would extend compassion to the hopeless and helpless.
Kindness (Col. 3:12) flows from a heart of compassion. Kindness opens door closed by anger (Col. 3:8). This kindness is reflected in action, not just in word. Who and How can you show kindness today? ________________ Ok, now do it.

Day 3: Clothed with Humility
Humility is becoming as rare as a spotted owl, but God expects it. John the Baptists exemplified humility. When certain religious leaders asked John if he was the Messiah, what humble response did he give (John 1:19-27)? _________________________________
During the final days of William Carey, a fellow missionary was speaking of Carey’s accomplishments to a group of people. After a while Carey interrupted, “Sir, you have been speaking about nothing but Dr. Carey. When I am gone, speak nothing of Dr. Carey- speak only about Dr. Carey’s Savior.
Meekness (Col. 3:12) is quality of perceiving God’s will as all-important. A meek person submits to God’s will and thinks God can handle any situation. Who was described as meek in Numbers 12:3? __________________
Colossians 3:12 also list longsuffering as part of the Christian uniform. Longsuffering or patience will allow us to forbear and forgive (13a), even as Christ forgave us (13b). It will allow God to turn our problems into occasions of forgiveness. And what, according to vs. 14, ties all those qualities together? ____________

Day 4: The Umpire Makes the Call
A baseball game without a umpire would be frustrating and tense. The word “rule: in Colossians 3:15 means to umpire or arbitrate. In order for peace to exist, God makes be making the calls. If calls is ignored or not even asked to make decisions, then frustration and tension will be present. Can you think of any examples in Scripture where God’s absence created personal problems?

Day 5: Even if You Can’t Carry a Tune

I cannot sing very well. Many of you would agree to that statement, but I love to sing when it is singing the word of Christ. Notice a few things about music according to Colossians 3:16.

Stop right now and sing “I Love You, Lord”. The thing is if we are singing to God, we better mean it.

Day 6: Putting It into Practice

All of Paul’s admonishments can be summed up in Colossians 3:17. Remember, our Christian uniform identifies us to Christ. The name on the front of a sports jersey should mean more than the name on the back, so it is with us. The praise should be directed to the One who unified us through His blood.

I am looking for a new name for the youth group. It was T-N-T, but I am planning on changing it. If you got any good ideas let me know. I have a few. I might post them in a few days and see what imput I get, but I wanted to see what you had first. I want it to say what we desire to be for God.
